Oriental perfumes tend to contain a number of ingredients that dominate. Known for their warmth and sensuality, oriental fragrances have an opulent bouquet with intensive ingredients that feature heavily, including musk and vanilla, as well as a number of resins and woods, such as Oud. Often, these distinctive scents are accompanied by notes of exotic flowers and spices.
The first process is to extract the essential oils from the natural products (or create synthetic versions). The natural oils are extracted from the base natural products, be they flowers, or wood, or any of the other ingredients mentioned above, through the process of steam distillation, solvent extraction, enfleurage, maceration, or expression. While all these processes differ in methodology, the end result is the same: a pungent, concentrated oil.
At this point, the scent is diluted in alcohol. It is the alcohol that determines the difference between perfumes, colognes, and eau de toilettes. Colognes will contain around 3-5% oil, and 80-90% alcohol. Eau de toilettes contain the least oil, averaging around 2% with 60-80% alcohol and the rest water. Perfumes are arguably the highest quality scents, containing as much as 10% to 20% oil dissolved in alcohol and a tiny amount of water.
Once the mixing process has been completed, the perfume, cologne, or eau de toilette has to be aged. This can take anywhere from a few months to even a few years. The “nose” will once again test the perfume to ensure a high quality final product.
The final scent is described according to its notes. Each essential oil and perfume has three: top notes, central notes, and base notes. Top notes tend to have tangy and citrusy scents. The central notes, sometimes also known as heart notes, provide body with flowery fragrances. The base notes make for an enduring fragrance, and they include your woods and resins.
